Townsman Small Billiard African Block Meerschaum Pipe - Number 6A pipe is the smaller version in the Townsman K.T. Crater Billiard models. The polished pipe has carved craters with circular patterns inside like a hammered effect. A pre-colored dark brown textured rim fades into a light yellow color. The pipe is made of genuine Amboseli block meerschaum and any lines on the surface are veins, not a crack. A solid metal fitting in the shank attaches to the tapered vulcanite stem. The Kiko elephant logo is stamped in white on the straight black stem. The pipe comes with a protective chamois drawstring pouch.
Stamped "Genuine Block Meerschaum" with the model number 6A on the underside of the shank and "Tanganyika" on the stem, this is an authentic block Tanganyika meerschaum pipe from Africa.
Although the pipe is over a half century old it is unsmoked in excellent condition. The pipe comes with its original box which has minimal wear and tear. It also includes an original small booklet telling a history of meerschaum with a description and pictures of the different pipe styles.
In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. Another mine was soon discovered near Lake Amboseli. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.
