Meerschaum Lined Billiard African Pipewood Straight Stem Pipe

Meerschaum Lined Billiard African Pipewood Straight Stem Pipe - This is an extra large straight stem African pipe with a deep bowl lined with solid block African meerschaum. The pipe is lightweight for its size and an ideal fit for the pipe smoker with a large hand. It is a smooth finish with a light polish to accent the natural color and fine wood grain. One side of the pipe bowl has the grain in a beautiful bullseye pattern. A solid metal fitting is in the long shank that attaches to a wide vulcanite saddle stem. The Kilimanjaro rhinoceros logo is stamped in white on the side of the straight black saddle stem.

Stamped "Kilimanjaro" with the model number 102 on one side of the shank and "Made in Tanganyika" on the other side, this is an authentic one of a kind pipe that is truely a unique find.

In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.

Although the pipe is over a half century old it is unsmoked in brand new pristine condition. The pipe comes with its original box which shows a little bit of wear and tear. This is a great collectible tobacco pipe as well as a great smoking pipe.
