Huntsman Rustic Billiard African Block Meerschaum Pipe - This rusticated Huntsman model African meerschaum pipe is a billiard with a deep bowl. Its textured carving gives the pipe a firm grip in the hand. The dark brown rim gradually fades into a rich, creamy color. The meerschaum pipe is carved from genuine Amboseli block meerschaum. A solid metal fitting in the shank attaches to the bamboo stem with a vulcanite mouthpiece at its end. The pipe comes with a protective chamois drawstring pouch.
This is an authentic blockmeerschaum pipe from Africa, and although the pipe is over a half century old, it is unsmoked and in excellent condition. The pipe comes with its original box with the Huntsman name printed on the top and Genuine Amboseli Meerschaum on the side. The box shows minimal wear and tear, and their name, Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation Limited, along with their elephant logo, is printed on the box. An original small booklet telling the history of meerschaum with a description and pictures of the different African pipe styles is also included.
In 1955 Kenyan businessmen from Nairobi established the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation after a meerschaum mine was discovered close to the surface on Mount Kilimanjaro. Another mine was soon discovered near Lake Amboseli. The meerschaum from this part of East Africa was known to be tougher, less porous and priced less than Turkish meerschaum. Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and became known as Tanzania in October of 1964. The company closed soon after.

I have always liked the traditional look of the billiard pipe. The African just has such a classic African look and I have been wanted a pipe of this kind for sometime.
It comes in a very classic box with a set of instructions as well as a small felt bag. Easy to assemble and clean and just a treat to smoke. I only recently got into pipes and most were briars that I just stumbled on. This was a treat for myself and I plan to get more.
Read the instructions and get to smoking. The history of these particular pipes alone is worth a good read.
